If you already have a RefWorks account, log in here.
Refworks is a web-based bibliographic citation manager that allows you to import, store and manage citations (references) to journal articles, books, websites, etc. You can then create bibliographies/reference pages formatted in either Vancouver or APA Style, or one of several other styles available.
RefWorks allows downloading, sharing and storing of information from bibliographic databases and other sources that may be copyright protected; check with the appropriate database provider(s) to ensure compliance with any restrictions.
Michener LRC has purchased a site license for RefWorks. This service is available to all Michener students, staff and faculty.
To use RefWorks, you need to create an account. Watch our video tutorial on creating an account. You will receive an email confirming the login name and password you created, along with the Michener RefWorks Group Code; keep this email for future reference.
Once you have an account, you can access RefWorks from within Michener, or anywhere else as long as you have a compatible browser and an Internet connection. If you are accessing RefWorks from outside Michener, you will be asked to authenticate, first with your GroupWise username and password and then with the Michener RefWorks Group Code (sent to you in your confirmation email) before being redirected to the log in screen. Log in to RefWorks now.
There are several online tutorials and guides for RefWorks and Write-N-Cite. A good place to start is the RefWorks User Quick Start Guide (RefWorks Classic) or RefWorks User Quick Start Guide (RefWorks 2.0). There are also excellent tutorials, with audio, that will walk you through the RefWorks Classic basic and advanced features and the RefWorks 2.0 fundamentals. In addition, you can access online help and RefWorks FAQ forRefWorks Classic and online help for RefWorks 2.0. These and other features are also available once you are logged into RefWorks.
How do I import citations from online journal databases?
An important component of using RefWorks is the ability to export/import citations from online data vendors. Each vendor is different; some allow a direct export while others require a two-step process. Here are the instructions on how to import from the databases available through Michener LRC: EBSCOhost, Google Scholar, NetLibrary, PubMed, ScienceDirect and Wiley Online Library. You can also watch Michener-produced video tutorials on importing from PubMed, EBSCOhost and Google Scholar. There are many more databases that allow export to RefWorks. Here is the full listing of online data vendors along with export/import instructions.
Write-N-Cite is a RefWorks program that allows you to insert your citations into a Word document as you are writing your paper and create a reference page/bibliography in one of several referencing styles. This program has already been installed on all student computers at Michener; to use it, click on the Start button—All Programs—RefWorks—Write-N-Cite. Word will open along with the Write-N-Cite login screen.
If you are using this from home, you will need to download a small utility program to your computer using these instructions, available for both Windows and Mac users.
