Services and Collections

Print and Audiovisual Collection:

The Learning Resource Centre (LRC) supports learning at Michener with a collection of books and print journals, including special collections for examination review guides, laboratory standards, and government documents. An extensive audiovisual collection is also available, and individual viewing facilities are provided.

Catalogue:

A computerized catalogue facilitates searching our book and audiovisual collections. The catalogue is accessible from the LRC catalogue icon on the desktop, and via the intranet or website.

Electronic Journals:

Full-text electronic journals and indexes (PubMed, CINAHL) are accessible at Michener from the desktop. Remote access is available from the E-journals page on our website. Some titles are freely available, while others require authentication and are limited to students with GroupWise accounts.

Photocopiers:

Individual copies are 15¢ per page, and copy cards are available for purchase at a reduced rate. Copying is subject to the limits of our Access Copyright licence.

Referencing styles:

For information and advice on the Vancouver or APA referencing styles, contact LRC staff, or consult our guide on Vancouver style.

Interlibrary loans:

Materials not available in the LRC may be borrowed from hospital libraries, the university system, CISTI, the National Library of Canada, the National Library of Medicine [U.S.], or other collections. Upon the request of a student, materials which are not available in the LRC may be borrowed from other libraries. Any charges by the lending library will be paid by the student.

Registration:

Students in on-site programs are issued photo ID cards automatically. Continuing education students who register for occasional courses may register in person at the LRC by presenting a course receipt. Distance students may register over the telephone at (416) 596-3123 or 1-800-387-9066, or via e-mail at lrc@michener.ca.

Borrowing Privileges

Books may be borrowed for one week. Exceptions:

  • Reference books may usually be used within the LRC only.
  • Short term loan books may be used within the LRC during the day. They may be borrowed after 4:00pm, to be returned by 10:00am on the following weekday. Books borrowed on Friday are due Monday morning.
  • Journals may be borrowed for one week.
  • Audiovisual materials may be viewed within the LRC only.
  • Up to three renewals are possible, unless another borrower has requested the item. Renewals may be arranged in person, by telephone at (416) 596-3123 or 1-800-387-9066 or by e-mail at lrc@michener.ca

Penalties

To ensure equal access for all borrowers, we charge a fine for items returned late or renewed late:

  • $0.50 per day per item for most books, journals and audiovisual items.
  • $5.00 per day per item for short term loan items returned later than 10:00am.

Lost items:

A charge applies for replacement of any lost item, based on its current market value, plus an administrative fee.

Services For Distance Students

Michener resources: We will send most of our books (except reference and short term loans), print journals and audiovisual materials by mail or courier to students living within Canada* but outside of the city of Toronto. Students may place a request by mail, telephone at (416) 596-3123 or 1 800 387-9066, or at lrc@michener.ca. The loan period is one week, plus shipping time. Loans may be renewed up to 3 times by telephone or e-mail.

Interlibrary loans: We provide services for obtaining journal articles from other libraries. Students may be required to pay the costs for some of these articles. Unfortunately, we are unable to arrange for interlibrary loans of books because of time limitations, but we recommend that students arrange these loans through their library services at work or via a local public library.

* International students please contact the LRC for alternate arrangements.
