Services and Collections
Print and Audiovisual Collection:
The Learning Resource Centre (LRC) supports learning at Michener with a collection of books and print journals, including special collections such as examination review guides, laboratory standards, and government documents. An extensive audiovisual collection is also available, and equipment for individual viewing is provided.
Catalogue:
A computerized catalogue facilitates searching our book and audiovisual collections. The catalogue is accessible from the LRC catalogue icon on the desktop, and via myMichener or the website.
Electronic Journals:
Full-text electronic journals (Ebsco, ScienceDirect, Synergy and others) and indexes (PubMed, CINAHL, ERIC) are accessible at Michener from the desktop. Remote access is available from the E-Journals page on our website. Some titles are freely available, while others require authentication and are limited to staff with GroupWise passwords.
Journal routing:
Please request a list of current journal paper subscriptions and indicate the titles you would like routed to you. As each new issue arrives, it is checked out to you automatically and forwarded to your 4th floor staff mailbox.
Temporary short term loans:
Faculty may request that specific LRC materials be moved to the short term loan shelf for a specified time period. This is designed to accommodate periods of peak demand for some resources, e.g. prior to student assignment deadlines.
Research:
LRC staff will produce customized literature searches from various sources. Bibliographies of LRC resources can also be produced, listing our books, journals or a/v materials on any subject. Obtain a Reference Request form from the LRC or on myMichener.
Training:
LRC staff have expertise in database searching methods, and offer advice on the choice of databases and subject headings, for those who prefer to do their own searches. Demonstrations of the LRC catalogue, PubMed and other databases can be arranged for groups or individuals.
Referencing styles:
For information and advice on the Vancouver or APA referencing styles, contact LRC staff, or consult our guide on Vancouver style.
Purchases:
All book orders are processed in the LRC, including materials for the Learning Resource Centre collection, resources for individuals at their workstations/offices, PD funded purchases, and clinical site resources. We also provide ordering information, such as the price or availability of a particular item, and can provide lists of recently published materials on any topic. Obtain a LRC Purchase Request form in the LRC or on myMichener, complete it and send it to your program's designated LRC representative (for non-program related materials, send the form directly to the LRC).
Textbooks:
The LRC acts as the required textbook liaison with the University of Toronto Bookstore. Submit completed University of Toronto Bookstore forms to the LRC to have textbooks available at the bookstore for student purchase. Contact LRC staff for more information.
Interlibrary loans:
Materials which are not available in the LRC are borrowed from hospital libraries, the university system, CISTI, the National Library of Canada, the National Library of Medicine [U.S.], or other collections. Rentals of videotapes for class showings can also be arranged.
Copyright approvals:
LRC staff are available to give information on copyright legislation and Michener's Access Copyright licence. Obtain a Copyright Permission Request form in the LRC or on myMichener.
