Using ScienceDirect Electronic Journals

ScienceDirect College Edition provides access to 890 full-text journals in health and life sciences, from Elsevier Science. Note that the ScienceDirect database contains abstracts for hundreds more titles. Full-text access is limited to authorized Michener users.

How to Begin:

  • From any PC at The Michener Institute, click on the LRC E-Journals & Indexes icon on the Novell-delivered applications menu, then select Journal collections - ScienceDirect.
  • For remote access, go to the LRC Electronic journals and indexes page and select ScienceDirect. When prompted, enter your GroupWise ID and password. Note that many fulltext articles are in PDF format and require Adobe Acrobat Reader, available free from www.adobe.com

How to Find Articles:

A. Search by Journal Title

  1. Click on the Journals button at the top of the screen if you know exactly which journal, issue, or article you need.
  2. Search by journal title using keywords (green box at right) or alphabetically (green box at left). When searching alphabetically, you may limit the search to just the subscribed full-text journals.
  3. Click on the journal title and select any issue to scan the table of contents. You may view the abstract of any article and the full-text of any article if Michener subscribes to it.

B. Basic Search by Subject

  1. Click on the Search button at the top of the screen.
  2. To limit your search to full-text journals, click on the Source pull-down menu and change All Journals (abstracts or full-text) to Subscribed Journals (full-text only).
  3. Enter search terms in the search boxes.
  4. Select fields to be searched, from pull-down menu.
  5. Select search operator AND, OR, AND NOT.
    • Using AND will combine two or more search terms and yield only those records that contain both terms. Use AND to narrow your search.
    • Using OR between two or more search terms will yield all records that contain at least one of those terms. Use OR to broaden your search.
    • Using AND NOT will refine your search by excluding a term, e.g. gene AND therapy AND NOT embryology
  6. Limit your search by date, if this is needed.
  7. To execute the search, click on green search button at the bottom of the screen, or press enter. If your search results are not satisfactory, or if not results are found, click on "? search tips" for help.

Tip: Use the wild card symbol ! to broaden a search, e.g. radiog! will find results that contain the words radiograph, radiographer, radiography, etc.

Viewing Results and Printing:

  • From the search results page, you may view the abstract of any article and the full-text of an article if Michener subscribes to it. Articles can viewed full-text in either html or PDF. In PDF, articles look the same as the original print version. (If you are asked to login, this means that Michener does not subscribe to the full-text of that journal. Go back to view the abstract.)
  • To print from the PDF version, click on the print icon in Adobe (do not print from the browser). To print from html, go to file in the upper left corner of your browser and drop-down to print. You can also save to a disk or save to your network files.
