Integrating the Principles of Interprofessionalism Into Everything We Do

There is growing consensus in Canada and abroad that interprofessional collaboration will improve access to health care, patient outcomes, recruitment and retention of health care providers and satisfaction among patients and health care providers which will lead to more efficient and effective use of health care providers’ skills.

The Michener Institute has introduced a new curriculum for allied health that interweaves interprofessionalism, simulation-enhanced education and competency assessment in preparation for clinical practice. In every allied health discipline, the result is a streamlined student experience with clear discipline and interdisciplinary outcomes.

Interprofessional collaboration provides applied health learners with greater opportunities to seamlessly contribute to patient care plans. Historically, The Michener Institute has instilled confidence in one’s allied health professional identity and context for one’s practice. We’re taking this a step further by building greater knowledge of and respect for the roles of other professionals, enabling the learner to find common ground and recognize boundaries when focusing on patient care.
