Michener’s international department develops customized programs which support strategic global initiatives aimed at improving health through education. Some of these initiatives include:

Qatar – Diabetes Educator Graduate Certificate program

In collaboration with the Qatar Diabetes Association, Michener has trained over 40 nurses in the Gulf region of Qatar.  Nurses from both the public and the private sector participated in this program which now runs on a yearly basis.  An estimated one in five Qataris are affected by diabetes and more than half have three or more risk factors.  This online distance program is certified by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and is taught by certified Diabetes Educators.  The program concludes with a hands on workshop offered in Qatar.

Caribbean – Advanced Ultrasound program

For over 15 years Michener has been offering the Advanced Ultrasound Diploma program in the Caribbean.  This program is offered via distance education which includes hands on scanning and clinical placements in the Caribbean.  In partnership with the University of the West Indies (Mona Campus-Jamaica) and the College of Science and Technology of Trinidad and Tobago (COSTAATT), Michener enrolls Radiological Technologists interested in upgrading their skills in Ultrasound.  Students from this program can proceed to write the ARDMS exam.

Strengthening of Medical Laboratory Services in the Caribbean

This project was developed and delivered in collaboration with the Caribbean Epidemiology Centre (CAREC) in Trinidad and Tobago.  The overall objective is that improved national and regional medical laboratory information leads to improved patient management, disease prevention and control.  The beneficiary countries were the 15 CARIFORUM member states.

Mobility Exchange – Funded by Human Resource Skills Development Canada (HRSDC)

The mobility exchange program aimed at improving the quality of human resource development in Canada and Europe. This project provided the opportunity for Canadian and European institutions to participate in student and faculty exchanges.  It also offered an online virtual mobility project.  These were bilingual projects in English and French and offered in the following disciplines: Radiological Technology, Nuclear Medicine, Radiation Therapy and Ultrasound.  Our partners from the European Union were from the UK, Belgium and the Netherlands.  Our Canadian Partners were from Halifax and New Brunswick.

Michener continues to seek opportunities to provide customized health science programs globally in continuing education e.g. Contrast Injection, Clinical Educator Certificate, Medical Laboratory Technology etc.
