The Student Success Network is here to help you through your time at Michener. Services available to students include counselling, peer tutoring, support for students who speak English as an additional language, learning skills seminars, e-mentoring, student health insurance, graduate job postings, and Michener’s career fair.

ACCESSIBILITY SERVICES

Accommodation is a means of preventing and removing barriers that impede students with disabilities from participating fully in the educational environment in a way that is responsive to their own unique circumstances.

BOOK EXCHANGE

An on-line market designed for students (and others) to buy & sell textbooks and other items.

CAFÉ 222

Managed by Dana Hospitality, Café 222 and catering provides the Michener community with an assortment of foods and food services. Café 222 has a relaxing ambiance and offers staff, students, and faculty a convenient facility to purchase prepared foods and snacks.

CAREER FAIR

Meet employers from across Ontario and beyond. Visit the Michener Career Fair and discover job options and opportunities. Key health care employers are eager to meet you "face-to-face". Other Michener Career Fair highlights include:- Networking Opportunities - Bring copies of your resume! Employers are looking for people like you.

CHAT CAFÉ(LANGUAGE SUPPORT)

This informal but structured opportunity is available to all students (at no charge!) each week during the academic year (except during examination and reading weeks). The Café is a LIVE, in-person opportunity to meet with other students and staff to explore English language and Canadian culture. Participants will enhance their English language and communication skills at Chat Café!

COUNSELLING SERVICES

At Michener, we know that your academic, career and personal life is crucial to your educational success. We offer support through Workshops and our Chat Café as well as through personal coaching and counselling.Feeling stressed about exams? Homesick? Concerned about your relationship or a family challenge? We offer caring, confidential and professional services for a wide range of life challenges.

EMPLOYMENT REGISTRY

We continually receive employment opportunity notifications from various employers across Canada. Details of these are posted to both the Michener web site and through myMichener (intranet).

MEDITATION ROOM

We have a non-denominational meditation room available to all Students, Faculty & Staff 24 hrs/day. Enjoy!

HOUSING INFORMATION

Interested in living in the heart of downtown Toronto? Residence life at The Michener Institute is fun, safe, and convenient. Our residence is co-ed, has twenty-four hour security and is located directly on campus. Students don't even have to go outside to get to class! We are also happy to offer an off-campus housing directory to those interested.

FITNESS FACILITIES

Michener's fitness facilities are available for all students, staff, faculty and paid members or guests - develop your own fitness program, compete, socialize or just relax. Student Council is actively involved in developing an athletics and recreation program tailored to student interests, including intramural sports. Facilities include:

  • Gymnasium for pick up sports such as basketball, indoor soccer, badminton, dodgeball and volleyball
  • Squash court
  • Table Tennis
  • Strength Training area with free weights, plate weights and selectorized machines
  • Cardio area with treadmills, ellipticals, stairmaster, rowing machine, spin bikes, recumbant bike and a flat screen TV
  • Day lockers, saunas and showers are available in the men's and women's change rooms

LEARNING RESOURCE CENTRE

The LRC supports Michener's students, faculty, and staff by providing resources, facilities, and information services. New staff and students are encouraged to visit the LRC for a tour and database demonstrations.The LRC has a large resource library of 18,000 items.

WALK SAFE

Two companions, a male and a female, will walk you between Michener and your residence/apartment, parking garage or transit stop, within the borders of College to Queen and Spadina to Jarvis. This service is designed to provide a safe escort to and from your destination. This service will operate between 7:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. Monday-Thursday, hours to be adjusted according to demand. This service runs from September until the end of April.

ROUNDS (formerly known as Workshops)

These sessions are designed to support student learning.Some topics include:- How To Give Effective Presentations- Journal Writing - Planning Your Writing Assignments - Effective Writing Strategies - Avoiding Plagiarism - Grammar Workshop and Proofreading - Content Editing and Revising - Strategies to Improve Multiple Choice Test Scores

PEER TUTORING

We recognize that students may require access to peer tutoring from time to time. Students may self-refer or may be recommended by faculty throughout the academic year. In either case, students will meet with a representative from the Student Success Network to establish the parameters for peer tutoring and are expected to commit to a schedule to ensure the best possible outcome.We also employ current students as peer-tutors!

HEALTH SERVICES

The focus of Health Services is to prevent injury and illness, and to promote healthy lifestyle choices. Health Services is responsible for preserving the confidentiality of staff and student medical information. Some Health services include:- Health and Wellness Counselling & Promotion- Administration of Immunization Information - Committee Representation- Healthy Workplace Committee.

Student Health Insurance Plan

CLAIM SECURE - Group Policy No. 516237
Provider: ACL Student Benefits
There is a Student Insurance Plan to cover students during the period in which they are registered in programs at The Michener Institute with the exception of UofT students. All students who were charged a student activity fee are covered by this insurance. This plan is meant to supplement Ontario health insurance. Pamphlets outlining the coverage and claim forms area available from the Health Services Office at The Michener Institute. The coverage does apply during the clinical component of the programs. Coverage information and claims forms may be obtained from www.claimsecure.com click on the "Member" key located in the "Online Services" menu, and follow the on-screen guide.
