HEALTH SERVICES REQUIREMENTS FOR THE 2010-2011 ACADEMIC YEAR

ALL Michener First Year Students must have the following Health Requirements submitted prior to the first day of classes: Tuesday, September 7th, 2010.

A. Health Record Form

B. Immunization Requirements

C. Vulnerable Persons Check

D. Canadian Red Cross Standard First Aid or St. John's Ambulance Standard First Aid & CPR for Health Care Providers

Please read and complete the requirements in FULL and refer to the supporting material available through the links. Also, please send the Health Nurse PHOTOCOPIES of the requirements as you will need the originals for your own records.

Second and Third Year students must have current clinical requirements (annual TB test, Vulnerable Persons Check and CPR Recertification).

Please Note:  Mandatory Mask Fitting Requirement

All students are required to be N95 mask fit tested - This test requires the removal of facial hair to allow for the adequate mask-to-face seal. Clinical sites require each student to have achieved this competency prior to their clinical training. The mask fit sessions will be arranged by your program and the health nurse.

A. Health Record Form

Health Services collaborates with Michener clinical partners as well as the general community to ensure that Michener students have their immunization records completed and up to date.

Students must obtain their specific immunization requirements from their family doctor or community clinic and can then complete and submit the Health Record Form to Health Services prior to the first day of classes.

Health Services, acting as a clearing house for the immunization documentation, will liaise with the clinical sites on students’ behalf, providing the necessary confirmations to enable clinical practice.

Click here to download the Health Record Form. It is requested all students make copies of their Health Record Form before sumbitting originals to Health Services, as information may be requested continually throughout the duration of each program, work placement and future employer. A $10 processing fee will be charged to reproduce this information.

B. Specific Immunization Requirements

All students must meet Michener immunization requirements prior to the first day of classes. These requirements meet the immunization standards and associated health practices set forth in:

  • The Public Hospitals Act 1990, Revised Statutes of Ontario, Regulation 965
  • Communicable Disease Surveillance Protocols published jointly by the Ontario Hospital Association and the Ontario Medical Association and approved by the Minister of Health
  • any future legislated changes to the Public Hospitals Act

Students are responsible for maintaining their immunizations while registered in Michener programs. This includes clinical placements.

I.  Tuberculosis

  • In accordance based on the above recommended guidelines, Two-Step Tuberculin Skin Test (Mantoux Test) is required for all students, regardless of prior BCG inoculation.
  • Students are required to have a documented 2-step tuberculosis skin test done prior to the first day of classes. This can be done through a family doctor or walk-in clinic. You are required to have one TB skin test administered, and read 2-3 days later. If a negative result appears, a second TB test may be administered 1-3 weeks later.
  • Individuals who have a positive skin test are required to submit documentation of the results of a chest x-ray done within the current calendar year.
  • Students are required to have an annual TB skin test and submit documented proof when completed.
  • It is essential to have accurate baseline information at the beginning of your clinical placement, as this is the comparison that is used in the event of an exposure.

II. Hepatitis B

  • Students must have a Hepatitis B immunity blood test done to confirm the presence or absence of antibodies.
  • If the student is positive for Hepatitis B antibodies, the student is considered to be immune.
  • If the student is negative for Hepatitis B antibodies, the student is required to complete a series of three doses of vaccine in an attempt to induce seroconversion.
  • An initial injection of the vaccine is given immediately with subsequent injections of the mandatory 3-part series to follow 1 month and 6 months after the initial injection.
  • 6 weeks after the last dose of Hepatitis B vaccine, students are required to complete a blood test to determine immunity and submit this blood test result to the Health Nurse.

  • Persons born before Jan 1, 1970 in Canada are considered immune

C. Vulnerable Persons Check

Programs at The Michener Institute require all first-year students to complete a Vulnerable Persons Check (VPC) prior to the first day of classes.  As well, students placed in clinical education are required to complete a satisfactory VPC prior to entering clinical sites, as students will have direct contact with students and other vulnerable persons. Depending upon clinical start date, students may be required to renew their VPC. Without a current VPC, students will not be cleared for clinical placement. The applicant is responsible for the costs associated with acquiring a VPC.

On December 8, 2009, the RCMP published an interim policy, outlining national requirements governing police record checks.  The policy took effect immediately.  There was no consultation or forewarning for OESC and no transition plan for organizations such as OESC.  As a result, OESC have been unable to conduct police record checks for students since that time.

In the interim, please complete your Vulnerable Person Check in person with your regional police.  Attached is a form with some of the police headquarters who conduct these checks, and their requirements. Students not residing in these areas must call their local police to determine where the VPC can be completed.

Please pick up the VPC form from the Health Services office Rm 1342 for those of you living in Toronto and York Region.

When you receive your Vulnerable Persons Check result,  please send a copy of the original to Genalyn Lo, Health Nurse, 13th floor, room 1342.

Please Note: This VPC is a requirement of The Michener Institute and the clinical site and is for this purpose ONLY. Once you graduate, you may require a current Vulnerable Persons Check in order to apply for certification.   Please consult your Regulatory College for further detail.
