Michener's G20 preparations

June 28, 2010

Sent on behalf of ELT and the Emergency Planning Team

With the G20 now having come and gone, and after a very brief but challenging weekend of protests and constant disruption in the downtown core during the G20 Summit, it is now time to try and return to a sense of normalcy. In the absence of further escalated disruptions or threats of protests, Michener will be open for business as usual today.

We encourage everyone to allow for extra time in their travels to ensure a safe and timely arrival into downtown as many people will be returning back to work today.

Thank you.

Please have your Michener ID on you at all times while in the building. Have it visible so that security can see it at any given time.

If you plan on working late next week on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday you will have to check in with security after 6:30 p.m. so that they know you are in the building.

The garage will be closed from Wednesday, June 23 at 7 p.m. until the morning of Monday, June 28. There will be no in-and-out privileges during this time.

TTC will be operating regularly scheduled service during the G20 Summit, with minor surface route changes (6 Bay, 72A Pape, and 320 Yonge buses).Unplanned interruptions will be communicated immediately to TTC customers online and through the media.

There will be increased security in the building and around Toronto. If you are walking or driving in the outer Traffic or inner Security zones please allot extra time to your commute for security checks.

Please visit the H+S & Emerg (http://my.michener.ca/policies/HealthSafetyEmergency.php) page on myMichener for information and reference links to other sites related to the G8/G20 Summits.

Thank you.

As the G20 Summit gets closer, Michener’s Emergency Planning Team, in consultation with the Executive Leadership Team, has put together a plan to ensure that our staff, faculty and students are not unduly put in harms way during that time.

As a result, the following decisions have been made:

Michener will be closed from Thursday, June 24 until Sunday, June 27, 2010 inclusive.

  • Staff and Faculty normally scheduled to work will be given these days off with pay.
  • Access to the campus facility during these four (4) days will be restricted to security and those living in Schatz Hall Residence. Exceptions will be made for critical building operations responses only.
  • All classes/labs/assessments on Thursday, June 24 and Friday, June 25, 2010 will be cancelled. There will be no remediation or rescheduling of classes, unless communicated from specific programs.

Michener will operate business as usual from June 21 - 23 inclusive, but expect delays in your commute time.

Clinical Students: If you are scheduled for clinical rotations from June 21-25 then you will be expected to attend as per your schedule. Depending on the location of your placement site, you may be requested not to attend on some or all of those days. Please abide by that direction. As there will be no academic repercussions to any clinical students affected by this, there will be no remediation or make-up in this circumstance.

Continuing Education Students: Courses scheduled for June 25 - 27 inclusive are cancelled. CE courses impacted by the closure will be re-scheduled. CE students enrolled in these courses will be communicated with under separate cover from the Continuing Education Department.

We encourage staff to reschedule any meetings currently scheduled between June 21 and 23, especially those involving external visitors.

Queen, King, Osgoode and St. Andrew stations are all within the outer security zone and Union Station will most likely be within the inner security zone. For your safety and protection, please follow any and all security warnings and alert directives while in or near the security zone areas. If in doubt, do not surrender personal information to anyone claiming to be an official agent without checking with the Toronto Police or the G20 Integrated Security Unit. Union Station will be under extra security in addition to restrictions to pedestrian flow, please account for this time in your daily commute.

On Monday, June 28, 2010, Michener will operate business as usual. If there are any changes there will be updates made by 6 a.m. Monday morning on www.michener.ca and on the main phone line.

We thank you for your patience and understanding as we sort through the impacts of this global event.  Given the potential for unforeseen circumstances surrounding the G20 Summit, we are committed to providing pertinent communications accordingly in a timely manner as and if any changes develop.

Thank you

The Emergency Planning Team
