BAPA110 - Introduction to PACS (12 weeks)

This is the first of four courses in the PACS Administrator program. This level will give participants the knowledge of how PACS works and how it improves efficiencies. Students completing this portion of the program will be able to describe the components of a PACS, compare the benefits of these different components and select the best components according to workflow needs. Topics such as Network terminology, PACS components and their functions, types of workstations, the relationship of a Radiology Information System (RIS) and/or a Hospital Information System (HIS) to PACS, interfaces and languages such as DICOM and HL-7, will be addressed.

MNPA120 - Managing PACS (12 weeks)

This is the second of four courses in the PACS Administrator program. This course will build on the knowledge gained in the "Introduction to PACS" course and give participants the background knowledge required to manage a PACS. The incorporation of ethical, privacy and data security principles when managing a PACS will be discussed. Operating principles, quality control, rules and workflow and solution implementation will be addressed. During the one-day workshop at The Michener Institute, simulations in the PACS laboratory will create opportunities for the student to problem solve day-to-day issues that arise in a PACS setting. The role of the System Administrator will be reviewed, confirming the requirement of knowledge and skill in the technical aspects of PACS, but also emphasizing the importance of communication, diplomacy and listening.

ADPA130 - Advanced PACS (12 weeks)

This is the third of four courses in the PACS Administrator program. This level will give participants the knowledge of some of the higher level responsibilities of managing a PACS environment. Students completing this portion of the program will be able to contribute to the development of a Request for Proposal (RFP), construct a plan for PACS implementation, discuss the implications on budgets and financial planning, and develop appropriate training plans, policies and procedures for providing adequate levels of support for the PACS customers. In addition, the students will be able to discuss the various traits of professionalism required to be a successful PACS administrator.

CLPA140 - Clinical Practicum (4 weeks)

This four week clinical practicum at an affiliated clinical site with a PACS installation gives the student opportunities to put into practice the knowledge acquired in the first two courses of the PACS program. Working closely with the designated PACS System Administrator, the student will be exposed to a variety of tasks and situations faced by System Administrators. The student will have the opportunity to complete daily System Administrator tasks and will be expected to contribute in the successful solution of issues and problems related to PACS.
