Assessments

Language Assessments

Clients will be assessed for their English language and communication skills using MELA (Michener English Language Assessment).

It is highly recommended that clients take the language assessments at the earliest possible opportunity to allow adequate time to address any language or communication problems. Language assessments are offered each month to permit greater access.

Profession Specific Assessments

These are multiple choice examinations similar to those offered through the national certification bodies. Each is 2 hours in duration.

Combined assessments

These are BOTH profession specific assessments (starting at 08:00 am) and language assessments (starting at 11:30 am) held on a single day. Please note that all clients are required to participate in both assessments, although not necessarily on the same day in a combined session.

The assessment results will provide the program leaders with the opportunity to establish a starting point for the clients and to provide feedback to the client to help with course selection and assessment of examination readiness.

These assessments are required in order to become an Access & Options client. Each session is a few weeks prior to the start of a new semester and you will NOT be permitted to take A&O courses until you have participated in one of these assessment sessions.

Select ONLY the course code(s) which is/are relevant to your profession!

For example:

  • if you are a Medical Laboratory Technologist you should register for LANG 100 and AOML 726, or
  • if you are a Radiological Technologist you should register for LANG 100 and AORA 726 or
  • if you are a Respiratory Therapist you should register for LANG 100 and RS003
