  • Good as Gold: The Launch of Michener's Golden Archives Project

Do you have Michener memorabilia, artifacts and relics? Donate them to the Archives Project!. Send an e-mail to 50th@michener.ca with a brief summary of your item - it could be Michener wear, class notes, or anything from your year!

On Tuesday, January 29th, Michener officially kicked off its 50th Anniversary with the launch of the Golden Archives Project. Before a crowd of 130 staff, faculty, students and alumni, Dr.Diana Michener Schatz, Michener's founder and the first President, reminded us that Michener "started on a showstring in 1958... and that the staff and faculty at the time made a go of it, irrespective of their situation." While reminiscing on the initiative shown by the early clinical staff and the risks they took, Dr. Schatz also reflected on that legacy today, "If you're in my shoes, you can only be proud of the staff, students and administration today because you ARE responding to a healthcare filed that needs you."

Dr. Schatz together with current president Dr. Paul Gamble, launched a year-long campaign to encourage alumni, faculty and staff to bring forward their Michener memorabilia, artefacts and memories, and to contibute to documenting Michener's significant 50-year history.

The displays and showcases of memorabilia ranged from clothing to special documents. One of the most sentimental of all was the original proprosal to the then Ministry of Health for the creation of Toronto Institute of Labratory technologists, which later bacame Toronto Institute of Medical Technology and is now The Michener Institute for Applied Health Sciences.

Ski trip photos, 1970's med lab rugby shirts and orientation T-shirts from the 1980's were just some of the artefacts on display from the Michener Archives. The need to build on and enhance the archives was the main reason behind the event. "We are looking for items that can be gifted to the Michener Archives such as brochures, event programs, old curriculum outlines, photos and other itemes people may have from their time at Michener," explains Sue Reynolds, manager,Learning Resource Centre. "We also invite past and present staff, students and faculty to write in and share stories of their favourite Michener memories."

Congratulations to alumna Christine Nielsen, winner of a brand new iPOD for sharing her Michener memory to be used for the Archives Project.
