What is MRI?
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a procedure that creates images of the body using radio waves in conjunction with extremely powerful magnets. This non-invasive technique relies on the magnetic properties of atoms, rather than radiation that is used in many other imaging procedures.
What does an MRI Technologist do?
MRI technologists utilize their communication, patient care and collaborative skills to interact with patients and other members of the health care team. They are responsible to ascertain each individual's safety in the MR environment before entering the magnetic field. MRI technologists utilize their knowledge of anatomy, physiology and the principles of MRI to safely and efficiently operate MRI scanners, assisting in the diagnosis of disease and injury. Effective MRI technologists are patient advocates who display reflective, responsible practice and have strong problem solving and technical skills.
Why become an MRI Technologist?
MRI technologists enjoy the challenges of working with new and emerging technologies.
- MRI is an expanding and growing imaging modality
- MRI technologists play a vital role within the diagnostic imaging team
- New MRI units are currently being installed in hospitals and clinics. Competent MRI Technologists are in demand
- Becoming an MRI technologist is a great opportunity to expand your skills within the Imaging field
Career Opportunities
Graduates are eligible to write the MRI National Certification Examination conducted by the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT). This certification is required to be eligible to work as an MRI technologist in most provinces. Employment options include hospitals, clinics and private sector education, sales and research. Graduates may apply for advanced standing at Ryerson University and have the opportunity to obtain a Bachelor and/or Masters degree of Applied Science (Medical Imaging) through distance education from Charles Sturt University.

What can I expect in the program?
The MRI Graduate Certificate program is a 19-month competency based program offered in a delivery mode designed with the working technologist in mind. You can continue working full-time while taking the didactic (theory) courses. The program finishes with a clinical semester. This requires full-time attendance at the clinical site.
- Please note that your clinical placement must be completed within 20 months of starting the program. Clinical placements cannot be deferred.
- The Distance program is web-based with weekly on-line chats with instructors and fellow classmates. Attendance at Michener is required one weekend in the second semester as well as for the first week of the clinical semester. Mid-term and final exams occur on Friday mornings. Students living within 100 km of Michener must attend Michener to sit the exams. Students living at a distance greater than 100 km from Michener may arrange for their exams to be proctored.
Start Date
The deadline to apply for the September 2012 intake is May 11, 2012.
**Two separate start dates for 2013** Applications will be considered for the affiliated start date only (see application deadlines). Start dates are: May 2013, September 2013.
Admission Requirements
Applicants must submit a certification and registration license as a technologist in Radiation Technology, Nuclear Medicine or Radiation Therapy (RTR, RTNM, RTT,) or Ultrasound (RDMS). An RDCS certification does not meet the admission requirements to this program.
Internationally educated and trained technologist must submit the following:
- a WES (World Education Services) evaluation of their international transcripts.
- an assessment of their language fluency (Students must meet Michener’s English language proficiency policy. Please view the English Language Proficiency Policy for further information. If you require an English language assessment, please review our English Language Assessment page for specific requirements.).
- if you have had an assessment of your credentials and field related work experiences, please provide.
Students must have access to a computer that meets the minimum system requirements, and access to the Internet.
Previous Medical Radiation Sciences (MRS) Students Applying to the MRI Program
Any previous MRS student applying to the MRI program requesting exemptions from any MRI courses that they have previously successfully completed must apply for the course exemption at the time of application to the program. Exemption application(s) (exemption application) requested
after applying to the program will not be considered. Approval of exemptions are at the discretion of the program. Challenge exams may be required ($30 fee applies per exam).
In addition, students who are granted exemption(s) will NOT be "fast-tracked." They will be in the cohort that they applied to and will be inserted into the program where they need to resume. A Leave of Absence (LOA) form will have to be submitted after your exemption(s) has been granted.
