What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a condition in which the body either cannot produce insulin or cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. If it is left untreated or improperly managed, the high levels of blood sugar associated with diabetes can slowly damage both the small and large blood vessels in the body, resulting in a variety of complications.

What does a Diabetes Educator do?

Diabetes Educators partner with patients and their families to teach diabetes self-management and help patients gain control of their disease.

Why become a Diabetes Educator?

Since the 1920's, education has been recognized as key to the management of diabetes. Health professionals working in diabetes education are experts not only in the disease state, but also in teaching and behavior change. The role of the Diabetes Educator has grown from being an "expert" giving out information, to one of "facilitator", helping people with diabetes to manage the disease themselves.

Nearly 1 in every 20 Canadians has Diabetes.

Career Opportunities

The combination of an aging population and the rapidly escalating incidence of diabetes is increasing the global demand for Diabetes Educators.

How long does it take?

Michener's Diabetes Educator Graduate Certificate Program is designed to be flexible, and is offered by distance online education with a four day workshop. Study on your own time and at your own pace, and complete the Certificate in twelve months.

At the four day workshop , theory will be integrated with practice. You will participate in small group discussions, case presentations, role playing and teaching practice as you evaluate and problem solve diabetes patient cases. Workshops are conducted by Certified Diabetes Educator facilitators. Upon successful completion of the online program, workshop, and final exam you will receive The Michener Institute's Graduate Certificate in Diabetes Education.

Will this prepare me to write the Canadian Diabetes Educator Certification Exam?

The Michener Diabetes Educator Graduate Certificate Program reflects the competencies as described in the CDECB Handbook and as such will help educators prepare to write the Certified Diabetes Educator exam with the Canadian Diabetes Educator Certification Board (CDECB).
